I am a long time blog resistor but I’m going to try just keeping a log of my writing day. In part, I want to keep momentum on my work in progress and also to shed a little light on the day to day process of creating a book. I’ll be posting filling them in each day and posting them at the end of the week.

Goals for the week: Write chapter 5 and prepare for the Oregon Council of Teachers of English conference.

Mon 4 October 2010

Started Chapter 5 of the the novel. Words for the day: 1556

Other writing tasks:

1. Started a blog post for the Mixed Up Files of Middle Grade writers words so far: 282

2. emails about the Oregon Spirit Book Award at the OCTE conference on Friday, mentoring a student with a job shadow project, helping an author friend learn to use Skype, send in photos for the mixed up files blog, and coordinate the October Young Writers Workshop at Powells

3. Prepare workshop for Friday OCTE–Teaching Revision with insights from the editor author relationship

Tues 5 October 2010

Almost done with chapter 5 Words for the day: 1122

Other writing tasks:

1. read and critique an opening chapter of a novel, the last 2 chapters of a novel and a short historical piece.

Wed 6 October 2010

Finished chapter 5 but more interestingly I found a stronger reason for my characters motivations and wrote a few paragraphs of dialog that I may be able to use later or at least will serve as a reminder for why Logan’s mom doesn’t want to stay at her sister’s house. words for the day: 818

Other writing tasks

1 Critique group

2. finish tweaking the powerpoint presentation for my OCTE workshop.

Thurs 7 October 2010

Nothing but running around today.

Fri 8 October 2010

And today I spent at the OCTE conference where I was awarded the Oregon Spirit Book Award. It was quite an honor to be sharing a stage with these amazing Oregon authors: Allan Say, Eric Kimmel, David Ward, Anne Osterlund, Laini Taylor and Virginia Euwer Wolff.

And then I had the Young Writers Workshop at Powells afterward so once again a zero writing day.

Other writing tasks

1. did manage to do a power point for the collaborative marketing talk

Sat 9 October 2010

Pouring rain. No tree house for me but 977 words on chapter 6 so that’s good progress.

Other writing tasks

1. hunted for MG author links for Mixed up Files Blog

2. email to my editor with questions

3. email to my agent with different questions

Total word count for the novel this week 4,475

Finished chapter 5 started chapter 6

Word count for other work 288
