Here’s a favorite family recipe for bread that is easy to make for parents and toddlers together or grade school aged kids on their own. It takes only an hour from start to finish.
Daddy Bread
2 cups all-purpose white flour
1/2 cup wheat flour
1 package or 2-14 teaspoons quick-acting active dry yeast
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup water
1/3 cup milk
I tablespoon butter or margerine
1 egg
1. Mix 1-1/2 cups flour with the yeast, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
2. Heat water, milk and butter to 125 degrees–that’s just a bit warmer that a child’s bath water. Stir this into the flour mixture and add the egg. Add the wheat flour and mix well. Keep adding white flour until you have a dough that is not too sticky to handle.
3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. Kids love kneading, so be sure to share this part. Put the kneaded dough in a clean bowl. Cover it with a cloth and let rise for 10 minutes. (long enough to read 2 or 3 picture books or a whole chapter of a longer book)
4. You can make this bread into many fun shapes. For a turtle, make four golf ball-sized balls of dough for the feet, one slightly larger ball for the head and a little ball for the tail. Use the rest of the dough to make a nice round turtle shell. Attach the head, feet, and tail. Cover the turtle with a clean dish towel and let rise for 20 minutes. (more time for reading!)
5.Heat the oven to 400. Cut a tic-tac-toe pattern on the shell. Sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds if you like. Bake 20-25 minutes until the bread is golden brown and smells delicious.
